چکیده

Abstract Since its inception, biodiversity has largely been understood as species diversity and assessed such. Interactions among or functional groups are gradually becoming part of an expanded concept biodiversity. As a case study the development research program in biodiversity, we summarize our multi-decade studies on interactions Asteraceae flowerhead-feeding insects Brazil. Initially, host were treated independent replicates order to assess local turnover components their herbivore diversity. Research then into sampling entire interactive communities plants associated herbivores different localities regions, enabling new lines be pursued. Interaction could factored spatial among-host components, suggesting field interaction geography. Second, specialization, key component diversity, was reframed considering simultaneously relatedness availability plant hosts. Third, with influence complex network theory, community-wide probed for topological patterns. Having identified modular structure these plant-herbivore systems, later demonstrated that they fit compound hierarchical topology, which nested within large-scale modules. In brief survey funded by Fapesp, especially Biota-Fapesp program, highlight several internationally recognized notably plant-frugivore plant-pollinator interactions, together theoretical models. The interplay analytical approaches established essential monitoring, conserving restoring broader sense.

Update on Ecological Genomics of Plant-Insect Interactions Ecological Genomics of Plant-Insect Interactions: From Gene to Community

A major challenge for current biology is to integrate research approaches that address different levels of biological organization, from subcellular mechanisms to functions in ecological communities. The study of plant-insect interactions provides interesting options for this. Ample information at the subcellular and the individual level is available on the one hand, while important insight in ...

Plant-insect interactions: molecular approaches to insect resistance.

Recent advances in our understanding of induced responses in plants and their regulation, brought about by a revolution in molecular biology, have re-focused attention on the potential exploitation of endogenous resistance mechanisms for crop protection. The future goal of crop biotechnology is thus to engineer a durable, multimechanistic resistance to insect pests through an understanding of t...

Insect-plant interactions: new pathways to a better comprehension of ecological communities in Neotropical savannas.

The causal mechanisms shaping and structuring ecological communities are among the most important themes in ecology. The study of insect-plant interactions in trophic nets is pointed out as basic to improve our knowledge on this issue. The cerrado tropical savanna, although extremely diverse, distributed in more than 20% of the Brazilian territory and filled up with rich examples of multitrophi...

Plant polyploidy and insect/plant interactions.

We used flow cytometry and extensive geographic surveys of herbivore attack to test whether repeated evolution of autotetraploidy in the perennial herb Heuchera grossulariifolia Rydb. (Saxifragaceae) has created evolutionary barriers to attack by the specialist moth herbivore Greya politella (Prodoxidae). We found that the moth has colonized tetraploid as well as diploid populations, has coloni...
